Le jeudi 23 mai 2019 à 17h00 une plaque commémorative Georges Lemaître sera dévoilée au Collège du Saint-Esprit à Leuven (Heilige Geestcollege, Naamsestraat 40).
En effet, à la demande de la Société Belge de Physique – Belgische Natuurkundige Vereniging (Belgian Physical Society, BPS), la Société Européenne de Physique (European Physical Society, EPS) a reconnu le Heilige Geestcollege comme un site historique de l’EPS.
Avec la citation suivante : Heilige Geestcollege, Office of Mgr. Georges Lemaître, The Founder of the Theory of the Big Bang
Mgr. Georges Lemaître (1894-1966), the original founder of the theory of the Big Bang and a professor at the University of Louvain, developed in this college his ideas about an expanding universe consistent with theory and observations.
The law of the expansion of the universe and the recession of galaxies that he predicted in 1927 is henceforth known as the Hubble-Lemaître Law.
His visionary proposal that the entire universe originates from a single quantum state was also formulated here in 1931.
This idea was met with scepticism by the scientific community initially, but gained significant support after the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation in 1964.
Mgr. Lemaître’s pioneering astrophysical contributions all remain central to the currently prevailing cosmological models and make him a visionary architect of modern physical cosmology.
Dans la foulée, à 18h00, la Salle des promotions académiques de la KU Leuven (Universiteitshal, Naamsestraat 22) accueillera une séance académique pour la remise du Historic Site Award par l'European Physical Society en reconnaissance des contributions fondatrices de Monseigneur et Professeur Georges Lemaître à la cosmologie physique moderne.
