Projet FSR (2020-2022): Diminutive constructions on a Germanic cline. The role of cross-linguistic competition and exposure in acquiring morphological and semantic-pragmatic competence (Promotrice: Kristel Van Goethem; Doctorante: Lora Allmanns)
Ce projet se concentre sur l'acquisition de constructions diminutives en anglais, néerlandais et allemand par des élèves de l'enseignement secondaire en Belgique francophone. Les langues germaniques utilisent plus souvent des structures morphologiques que les langues romanes (par exemple, feestje en néerlandais par rapport à petite fête en français). Peu d'attention a été accordée à l'impact de ces différences interlinguistiques sur l'acquisition de langues étrangères. De plus, l'acquisition des diminutifs est encore plus complexe en raison de la multiplicité des nuances sémantico-pragmatiques qu'ils engendrent. Le projet étudiera la qualité et la quantité de l’input qui est nécessaire pour que les apprenants parviennent à surmonter ces obstacles et à acquérir des compétences morphologiques et sémantico-pragmatiques dans une langue étrangère.
The current project focuses on the acquisition of English, Dutch and German diminutive constructions by secondary school learners in French-speaking Belgium. Germanic languages use morphological structures more often than Romance languages (e.g. Dutch feestje vs French petite fête). Little attention has been paid to the impact of these cross-linguistic differences on foreign language acquisition. Moreover, the acquisition of diminutives is even more complex due to the multiplicity of semantic-pragmatic nuances they yield. The project will investigate how much and which types of exposure learners need to overcome these obstacles and to acquire morphological and semantic-pragmatic competence in a foreign language.
